The Joy of Giving

At 77, Mdm Woo greets each day with quiet strength, sharing kindness and joy with those around her. In her younger days, she was a familiar face at a secondary school canteen. Known for her warm smile and her signature Lor Mee, her stall often drew long queues. Despite the demanding nature of being a food vendor, she worked tirelessly to provide a better life and education for her young family.

However, at the tender age of 41, her life took an unexpected turn when she was diagnosed with kidney failure. In the blink of an eye, she had to give up her beloved food stall to focus on dialysis and rehabilitation – a life-altering journey that requires strength, resilience, and support.

Today, Mdm Woo manages her own treatments while also being the primary caregiver of her frail, elderly husband who can no longer accompany her to dialysis treatments. He too faces multiple health challenges.

Despite these hardships, Mdm Woo has found friendship, comfort, and encouragement through NKF’s patient support group. From outings to simple makan gatherings, these treasured moments bring her immense joy. “I’ve made many friends who share this journey, and the staff are always there to help. We look out for each other. That assistance means everything.”

She finds joy in sewing and handicrafts, which help her pass the time meaningfully, and earn some pocket money. She even gives back by teaching fellow patients to bead necklaces.  “I live each day to the fullest,” she says with a smile.
