He moves around on a personal mobility device with a missing leg, spreading joy and encouragement to the patients around him. He is like a big brother, a ray of sunshine, always ready to help and lift their spirits.
Far from being disabled, 48-year-old Mohd Kamsani Ab Hamed is a greatly enabled community champion.
What started as a blood infection many years ago resulted in a coma, diabetes, high blood pressure and kidney failure. He was given a grim prognosis. “You only have three months left to live,” warned his doctor.
Kamsani triumphed over adversity as three months became 10 years of dialysis. Instead of wallowing in his circumstances, he turned towards volunteerism. For someone with little, Kamsani has lots to offer. His compassion for others motivated him to lead food distribution drives and support low-income families with the purchase of groceries. He looks forward to his thrice-weekly dialysis sessions, relishing the opportunity to befriend and care for fellow patients, making sure he is kept up to date about their conditions, sharing snacks with them and spreading smiles.
Kamsani also advocates healthy living and strict adherence to dialysis treatment plans, often urging reluctant and discouraged patients to continue their treatment, saying, “Don’t give up now, especially after enduring the challenges of kidney failure. Dialysis is our lifeline, so keep pressing on!”
His joy in giving creates a lasting impact on everyone he helps. He often chimes, “I enjoy helping others without expecting any return. I’m happy as long as the people I’m helping are happy too.”
Join patients like Kamsani who continue to give to others even if life is a challenge, and together, let’s experience the joy of giving!
