In his mid-20s, Mr Tan Wan Heng’s life took an unexpected turn. While serving National Service, routine health screenings uncovered abnormalities, leading to his discharge. At the time, he had no idea his kidneys were failing.
It was only two years later, after he began experiencing severe vomiting and was hospitalised, that he received the devastating diagnosis of kidney failure. Soon after, he was started on dialysis and was told that the treatment would be lifelong.
Despite the physical and emotional challenges of the past few decades, Mr Tan never gave up. He worked tirelessly in various jobs to provide for his family, determined to remain their pillar of strength. In his 50s, he took on his last job as a taxi driver, before his declining health forced him to stop working.
With advancements in dialysis care, Mr Tan is currently receiving treatment through a Haemodiafiltration (HDF) machine, a form of dialysis that provides enhanced removal of toxins. Since then, he has experienced a remarkable improvement in his quality of life.
“Since switching to use HDF machine in 2022, I have experienced fewer side effects during dialysis, no more cramps, better & steadier heart rate, and a renewed sense of well-being,” said Mr Tan.
Today, at 63, Mr Tan continues living independently. He helps out with simple household chores, enjoy meals with his family and, most importantly, cherishes precious moments with his loved ones.
