Traveling around the island to pick up passengers as a private hire driver, 29-year-old Muhammad Izzad Aman hardly looks sickly. However, what transpires in his personal life is equally heart-wrenching as it is heart-warming.
Mr Izzad had been best friends with Ms Nur Sharmin since they were teenagers. Shortly after they met, Izzad was diagnosed with kidney disease – its cause unknown. An active young man who took part in marathons, then 18-year-old Izzad found himself growing weaker, and barely able to finish a soccer match. He battled with fever at least once a week, and headache every day. As a teenager in his prime years who found himself unable to live life like his peers, his mental well-being took a fall. Izzad told himself to chin up, and he eventually accepted his plight. Through his ordeal, Sharmin remains by Izzad’s side and did not mind his condition.
In 2017, the young pair started dating, and in 2021, they officially tied the knot.
“Because of the subsidies, I can save a bit, and it will help us when we want to build a family in future,” said Mr Izzad
While blissfully in love, the couple found themselves having to also endure many challenges.
For 11 years now, Izzad undergoes dialysis while juggling a career as a private hire driver. He can only work a limited number of days as undergoing dialysis three times a week takes a toll on him. Although Izzad hopes for a transplant, he is deemed unsuitable due to medical complications. To supplement the household income, his wife works full-time as a warehouse assistant.
NKF provides Izzad with subsidised dialysis treatments and support for his well-being.
As a young couple, they hope to be able to build a loving family together in future.
Let your support bring hope and life – both quality and quantity – to Izzad and many other patients receiving treatment.
